Weinbrenner announces new $14.5M facility in Marshfield
MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAW) – The City of Marshfield has given its stamp of approval for Weinbrenner Shoe Company to construct a new facility along Highway 10.
The company, founded in 1892, is one of the oldest shoe-manufacturing companies in the United States. It is best known for its Thorogood work boots.
Marshfield Mayor Lois TeStrake said, “They knew that Marshfield was a great commitment. Being here for a hundred years and here we are. Hopefully a hundred more.”
At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Common Council voted in favor of a development agreement with Weinbrenner Shoe Company to build in the Mill Creek Business Park. The construction is estimated to cost $14.5 million. A groundbreaking ceremony will likely be next month.
“They do need to go yet before The Plan Commission for approval of the property because it’s a large improvement,” Marshfield Director of Communication Tom Loucks said. “So they can have the site plan looked at and reviewed, and they also need to go before our Covenants Committee.”
The new facility will have a retail store like the one in Merrill but with something extra.
“Which will also allow for full visibility and transparency of the manufacturing process,” Ellis Construction Executive VP Andrew Halverson said. “Those who believe in American craftsmanship are going to be able to be there to support the brand, buy the footwear in Marshfield but maybe more importantly get a chance and see the manufacturing.”
According to a news release, the facility will be 70,000 square feet and is expected to create 35 new jobs.
Senior VP of Operations for Weinbrenner, Rob Burnett, said, “New jobs in engineering to help with automation, expanding quality because we have a culture of quality so we are continuing to invest in quality.”
“We could not be prouder as a community to have partnered with Weinbrenner to assist with incentives to ensure this great local employer stays here in Marshfield and grows,” said Mayor TeStrake. “Weinbrenner has employed hundreds of folks here in Marshfield over the years, and thankfully, with their large investment and commitment to stay right here, we will be able to celebrate hundreds more over the years,” TeStrake added. The company has selected Ellis Construction of Stevens Point to build the state-of-the-art facility, focusing on employee health and productivity.
The new facility will be completed by the end of next year.
Weinbrenner Shoe Company has been in Marshfield for nearly 90 years. It currently employs 120 people.
